Adult Formation
Spiritual Growth is a part of what it is to be human. At St. Thomas, we honor and explore that in a variety of ways, including traditional offerings such as Adult Confirmation, Bible Study, and class opportunities, as well as opportunities for fellowship, outreach, and small group ministry.
- Bible Challenge – Participants read the scriptures, day by day, in chronological order. Each day begins with a brief summary of that day’s readings followed by the day’s reading. Interspersed with the day’s scripture are repetitions found elsewhere in the Bible or scripture detailing other events referred to in the day’s reading. The readings are supplemented with appropriate videos providing additional information about particular themes or concepts. Each day’s readings conclude with thoughtful questions.
- Sunday Morning Formation – This group meets Sunday mornings between the services September–May and covers a wide variety of spiritual formation topics including book/Bible studies and other activities that help people grow in their faith.
- Adult Confirmation – In this group we prepare to celebrate the sacrament of confirmation. We study our faith more intentionally, learn about the Episcopal Church, and prepare to renew the promises we made at our baptism. This group typically meets in the first half of the year for 6-10 weeks based on the schedule of the Bishop.
- Thursday Morning Bible Study – This study focuses on the Bible and Biblical themes. We have done brief overviews of every book in the Bible, including the Apocrypha. We studied Grace in the Rear View Mirror (discerning God’s presence in our life) and The Friendship of Women (characteristics of friendship exemplified by women in the Bible). This year we will study Bible Women: All Their Words and Why They Matter and The Royal Priesthood.
- Wednesday Study Group – The Wednesday group was formed to explore theology more broadly. We have studied Marcus Borg, Richard Rohr, Thomas Merton, Illia Delio, Brian McLaren and Dominic Crossan. We don’t require reading or preparation, because we use videos to spur our lively discussions.
Small Groups
St. Thomas has a strong practice of fellowship within small groups. Our groups follow several models, and offer participants a chance to get to know others in the parish and to participate in Bible Study in a sustained way out of that fellowship. Many small groups participate in an outreach program together.
