Summer 2017

St. Thomas hosts many fun camps and events each summer for the children and youth of our congregation and community!   These events provide a chance for participants to learn about their faith, serve the community, and explore their gifts and talents.  Our programs are available for a variety of age ranges and cover a variety of areas including arts, service and spirit.

Episcopal Diocese of Kansas MEGA CAMP  – June 4-10, 2017 (ages:  entering 4th grade through High School)

Join Episcopal Children and Youth from across the state for this once-yearly sleep away camp at the beautiful YMCA Camp Wood in Elmdale, KS (west of Emporia)!  Each year, youth from the summer before their 4th grade year through High School join together for a week of fun, fellowship and exploring faith during the first full week of June.  The camp is sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of KS Youth Ministry with volunteer leadership in faith activities by diocesan clergy and lay ministers (including a few members of our own St. Thomas staff).  Camp activities run by YMCA personnel include supervised swimming, horseback riding, canoeing, games and more!

Reaching Out to the Community (ROTC)

This week-long service-oriented day camp has been a great success over the last six years.  The event engages our children and youth in community outreach. Our program is from 9-5 p.m., we open the doors at 8:00 a.m. and close the doors at 5:30 p.m. to help our parents who work with drop-off and pickup. Each day we travel together to various sites that have included: Heart to Heart, Kansas City Community Kitchen, St. Paul’s Food Pantry, Operation Breakthrough, Harvesters, Special Olympics, and the Ronald McDonald House. We eat sack lunches at mid-day and play in the afternoon at one of the city’s fun spots like: putt-putt golf, bowling, pool parties, the Zoo, movies, moon marble factory, and more.  We will also have a special celebration on Fridays for all the hard work during the week.   The youth will need to bring sack lunch and a water bottle daily. Some days’ activities require a change of clothes.  Participants will be informed of specific scheduled activities prior to the event.  The cost for ROTC is $175/student.

ARTS Camp

This week-long day camp provides our students a chance to explore and develop their artistic abilities. We provide mentoring and coach in many areas including music, composition, dance, cullinary and visual arts. Members of St. Thomas offer their gifts in mentoring the youth in these various artistic fields.

Young artists will choose from a variety of guided experiences including culinary arts, vocal and instrumental small ensembles, movement, art, and drama. Projects will be shared with the people of St. Thomas at a worship service featuring the creative activities of the students. This year we will work together to produce and perform a musical entitled “The Prodigal Son.”  Teens are invited to serve as counselors and assistants and can contact Dr. Beth Elswick at belswick@stthomasop.org . The cost is $150/student.
